From the frontlines to diplomatic arenas: a unique lecture on frontline diplomats held at the library

As part of the celebration of the 82nd anniversary of Vitebsk's liberation from Nazi invaders, the regional library hosted a special event on June 26 dedicated to the heroic legacy of Soviet diplomats.
Igor Demyanenko, head of the Russian Federation Embassy's department in Vitebsk, revealed lesser-known chapters of history where the courage of wartime blended with the delicate art of international diplomacy. Attendees were immersed in the spirit of true public service, inspired by stories of those who first defended their homeland with weapons in hand and later in the diplomatic arena.
In the history of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more than 160 frontline veterans were awarded the highest diplomatic ranks after the Great Patriotic War and served as ambassadors representing the country in various nations for extended periods.
Among them were 15 Belarusians, five of whom – Pyotr Abrasimov, Mikhail Zimyanin, Sergey Kiktev, Vitaly Smirnov, and Terenty Shtykov – were natives of the Vitebsk Region. These individuals led Soviet embassies in major global locations – from France and Poland to Vietnam, North Korea, and Afghanistan. Notably, from 1969 to 1974, Vitaly Smirnov successfully served as the Permanent Representative of the Belarusian SSR to the United Nations.
Igor Demyanenko's presentation served as a powerful reminder that talent, resilience, and patriotism are key to victory on all fronts – both military and diplomatic.
