On March 10, on the eve of Orthodox Book Day, an exhibition-viewing of rare Orthodox editions «Spiritual books divine wisdom» opened in the library's rare book department.
March 14 is Orthodox Book Day in Belarus. The holiday has been celebrated since 2011 and is dedicated to the publication of the first printed Bible in the East Slavic lands by Francysk Skaryna in 1517–1519, as well as to the release of the «Apostle» in 1564 by deacon Ivan Fedorov and Pyotr Mstislavets, who came from Belarusian lands, and the first printed book in the Muscovite kingdom.
Students from the Vitebsk State Technical College were among the first to visit the exhibition-viewing. The children were able to get acquainted with rare Orthodox editions of the 19th century and facsimiles of book monuments, including the «first book» of Belarusians – the Polotsk Gospel (12th century), a unique example of the art of painting and calligraphy of the 14th century – the Kiev Psalter, one of the Orthodox shrines of Belarus – the Slutsk Gospel (16th century) and many others.
Visitors expanded their knowledge of the history of Slavic writing and Orthodox books, were able to hold the original of an ancient Book of Hours in their hands, and leaf through the pages of rare editions.
We invite all book lovers to the exhibition-viewing «Spiritual books divine wisdom», which will last until March 20.
