In 1969, 55 years ago, the book «Vitebsk underground» was published, a landmark for our city. This study is a tribute to the eternal memory of the heroes of the patriotic underground, it contains more than a thousand names of people who stood up to fight the enemy in occupied Vitebsk during the Great Patriotic war.

The authors of the book – Nina and Nikolai Dorofeyenko, Nikolai Pakhomov were also participants of the Great Patriotic war. Soon the third edition of the book «Vitebsk underground» will be published in the publishing house «Zvyazda».

The book is based on the materials of the thesis «Vitebsk partisan and patriotic underground during the Great Patriotic war (July 1941 – June 1944)» by historian Nina Dorofeenko, defended in 1968. The appendix to the thesis was the «Photo album of the participants of the Vitebsk underground», compiled by Nina Dorofeyenko. There are 192 photos on its pages – these are the leaders of the partisan and underground movement, underground, reconnaissance groups, underground fighters, liaisons, hosts of safe houses. Nina Dorofeyenko spoke at educational institutions, labor collectives with stories about the heroes of the Vitebsk underground, showed this photo album.

Vitebsk regional library is grateful to Valentina Kucherenko, daughter of Nina and Nikolai Dorofeyenko, who gave us the materials of the photo album for digitization. On many pages there are comments and notes left by Nina while working with it, which makes the photo album even more valuable.
