Interactive quest «City of Good»

On September 11, as part of the library project «Together», with the aim of expanding information awareness about the lives of blind and visually impaired people and increasing tolerance in society towards them, the interactive quest «City of Good» was held in the Vitebsk Regional Library.
The guests of the event were students of grade 7 «A» of the secondary school № 21 of Vitebsk named after the Hero of the Soviet Union V. Demidov.
The students learned about the areas of work of the library, studied various types of publications and typhlo-technical equipment for blind and visually impaired users, got acquainted with the history of the white cane, learned about the life path of successful blind people who, despite difficulties, were able to find their calling and realize themselves.
Deputy Chairperson of the Vitebsk Regional Organization of the NGO «BelTIZ» Natalia Avgustinovich told the students about the peculiarities of life of blind people, about the ethics of communication with them, explained why the blind need a white cane and in what cases an escort is necessary. Member of the Vitebsk organization Dmitry Kholodovich, a specialist in social work at the State Institution of Social Services «Vitebsk Home for the Elderly and Disabled» demonstrated the operation of the navigation system and modern gadgets that improve the quality of life of people with visual impairments.
The participants of the quest were asked to blindfold themselves and plunge into the darkness to look into the world of blind and visually impaired people, focusing only on sounds, voices and their own feelings, to visit completely different spaces, master writing and reading in Braille, and also tried to assemble a Rubik's cube, pour liquid into a glass, sit on a chair.
After the event, the participants of the tiflo-quest shared their emotions and told each other how familiar things blindly take on a different reality.
