Evening-memory «Afghan roads of Valery Marchenko» for the 70th anniversary of the birth of the internationalist soldier, guard lieutenant colonel, writer took place on September 10 in the library.
Valery Marchenko twice, in 1979-1981 and 1987-1989, took part in military operations in the Republic of Afghanistan. He was awarded two Orders of the Red Star, the Order of the Red Banner of the Republic of Afghanistan, 26 medals. Member of the Union of Writers of Belarus since 2012. Author of a series of books on Afghan topics: «Afghan: Airborne Forces Intelligence in Action» (2005), «Vector Afghanistan» (2008), «Afghan: Where the Sky Touches the Mountains» (2008), «Afghan Rift. The Origins of Global Terrorism» (2017), «Afghan: Airborne Forces Intelligence in Action. We Were the First» (2018) and the fictional historical novel «Kalinov Most» (2020).
Valery Marchenko has repeatedly spoken at various events in the Vitebsk Regional Library, and held presentations of his books here. He was also a frequent guest at the city's educational institutions.
Internationalist soldiers Mikhail Laas and Nikolai Andreychuk shared their memories of Valery Marchenko and his cadet years at the Ryazan Guards Higher Airborne Order of Suvorov Twice Red Banner School. Valery M. friend, internationalist soldier Pavel Nazarov, spoke about his Afghan roads. Kind words about Valery Marchenko, an excellent officer, a person with an active life position, were said by the chairman of the regional organization of veterans of the war in Afghanistan Valerian Matskevich, the chairman of the regional organization of veterans of the airborne troops and special operations forces Vyacheslav Belous, and the internationalist soldier Alexander Klitsunov. Member of the Union of Writers of Belarus, Doctor of Philology Elena Kriklivets, spoke about Valery Marchenko as a talented prose writer.
Valery Marchenko's eldest daughter Svetlana Sokolova shared pages of the family album, telling about their family, children and grandchildren of Valery M., his hobbies, and social activities.
Throughout the evening, songs were performed by Vyacheslav Belous, Yuri Pavlyuk, members of the vocal groups «Sounds of the Wind» of Secondary School No. 46 and «Smile» of Secondary School No. 47 in Vitebsk.
