The Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. Lenin took part in a unique professional development program «Our Libraries: Read in Russian», which was held in St. Petersburg from August 25 to September 1, 2024.
This project has been implemented for the second year by the Central City Public Library named after V. Mayakovsky on the initiative of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg with the organizational support of Rossotrudnichestvo. Representatives of 10 countries came to the northern capital to exchange experience and creative ideas: Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and South Ossetia. The head of the general reading room of the regional library, Tatiana Pototskaya, took part in this large-scale event as part of the largest delegation from Belarus (15 people).
During the program, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the best practices of St. Petersburg libraries in the areas of collection formation, use of electronic resources, interaction with other cultural institutions, and expansion strategies.
Each part of the educational program was conducted on the basis of the existing practices of library institutions in St. Petersburg: the Russian National Library, the Presidential Library and many others, with whose management the librarians managed to hold working meetings. The participants of the program were deeply impressed by the libraries in the Krasnogvardeisky District of St. Petersburg. The art residency «Shkaf», the library «Sfera» and the library and cultural center «Nota» demonstrated conceptual content and their connection with the needs of the communities in which they exist.
This year, the program was supplemented by a visit to inclusive libraries and an introduction to their work using the example of the St. Petersburg State Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the St. Petersburg Central Children's Library, named after A. Pushkin.
In addition to professional visits, the library held a training session entitled «Creating a project that people need. Searching for ideas through design thinking algorithms». Active group work will allow participants to prepare five project ideas for further joint work in the main areas of the development of a modern library.
In addition to the educational part of the program, the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg conducted a bus and walking tour of the city for the librarians and organized a visit to the Gatchina Museum-Reserve, the «XX Century» Literary Museum, the Baltic House State Theater, and the Singing Bridges Show.
The experience gained by our library employee during the program will be an excellent start for the implementation of new ideas in the work of the institution.
