Free Courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town». «Vitebsk and Its Surroundings at the Beginning of the 19th Century».

On the 23rd of March the library hosted a regular session of the free courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town» which held the title «Vitebsk and Its Surroundings at the Beginning of the 19th Century».

This time the lectors and guests were invited to hold their meeting at the cozy and restored meeting hall. At the beginning of the lecture Director of the library Tatyana Adamyan took the floor to greet the audience and wish more cultural events and meetings to be held in this hall, as well as at the library itself, and more residents of Vitebsk to become readers of the regional library.

Then the lecture started. Chief Specialist at the Main Department for Ideology, Culture and Youth Affairs of the Vitebsk Executive Committee and Candidate of Historical Sciences Denis Yurchak spoke about the sources that testify to the period of the beginning of the 19th century in Vitebsk: memoirs and historical literature, watercolors by Jozef Peshka. Head of the Department of the History of Belarus at VSU named after P.M. Masherov and Candidate of Historical Sciences Anatoly Dulov dwelled upon the content of «Old Man's Notes» by Maximilian Marx, original «historical sketches of a Vitebsk resident», and «A Letter from Vitebsk» by Ignat Mankovksi. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Historian and Local Lore Specialist Nikolai Pivovar described the fate of the szlachta and the recruitment to the Tsar's Army.

The audience had an opportunity to feel the vibe of a ball of the 19th century due to the outstanding performance of the participants of the club of historical re-enactment «Paunochnaya Vezha». Christina Bondareva, a member of the club, spoke about the club's activities. Her speech was followed by the reenactment of a couple of dances that root back to that era.

Books recommended for those willing to make a more comprehensive study on the subject of the lecture can be found at the Department of Local History Literature and Bibliography. The records of the lecture can be found at the project's community on VK and on the website of the Vitebsk Regional Library.
